Title: Free Charge
Post by: jasonbroomer on May 10, 2019, 09:03:44 AM
In the Forced Charge section, it is 3 MU directly ahead.

In the free charge section is says something like 1MU directly ahead for non missile armed troops, or within 3MU for CL, DC

Do CL/DC have to be within 3MU directly ahead? Or just within 3MU...

I've always wondered!

I see what you are getting at but I believe the "directly ahead" in the sentence applies to the whole sentence.  So I believe it is only a free charge if the target is directly ahead.

So Simon

1)you mean that a charging lancer with enemy at 3 bw ahead but willing to wheel must pay to charge?
According to 9.4.a.3.1 all charge may include a wheel up to 90*. No matter it is a free a forced or a prompt charge, right?

2) in case the target moves first can a free charge straight ahead make a wheel to reach the enemy

Thanks for confirmation and making it extra clear (maybe in the claries)
I m fairly sure it wasn't played like this By many players, me included.

I don't think Si has said or implied that. The "directly ahead" bit only determines whether a charge is forced/free it says nothing about its declared direction.

Indeed. Once you have determined whether it needs a card or not you can then choose the direction. A free/forced charge is not limited to directly ahead.

Page 70 section 5.1 says you can only alter the direction of your charge from that declared if by doing that you catch a unit that has skirmished or run away.

The clarries have then expended this with:

Charging at troops that moved It is intended that if a target is moved then charge direction can be changed in an attempt to catch it. The rules state this for "evaders" but it also applies to targets that moved because they charged first or countercharged. Add in Charges "Charges must stick to their declared direction of charge except that if a target moves for any reason prior to charge execution the direction may be changed to attempt to catch said target. Where  two or more targets exist the charge must target that most easily reached, so if one has stayed where it is you must charge that rather than altering direction to attempt  to catch one that has moved."
