Hoplites were not playing correctly under the existing rules. Too good against mounted and not good enough against foot. The games we have played with hoplites using the amendments have worked really well. Even against "heavy" cavalry they are far from a pushover. +2 claims while in 2+ ranks at both impact and melee - legions with melee expert are only +2 at impact, +1 at melee. Remember they can be in 9's and the cavalry will generally be in 6's.

This is the LS discussion not the "spear" discussion . But mixing periods I would say yes there is a problem as shieldwalls did have the same flank problems as hoplites : unprotected right flank and a tendency to go left
