Title: 2026 Proposed Amendment - #9.1 - Mounted Infantry

Change ""Mounted Infantry" instead of "Dismountable". Dismountable rules for infantry no longer apply. Mounted infantry flank arch as cavalry but arrive as infantry and scout as skirmish foot."
Points cost reduced compared to dismountable.

The current dismountable rules for infantry don't reflect battle accounts.  The change removes the need for mounted figures, the UG is always an infantry UG.  Mounted infantry have two benefits, contributing to scouting and being able to flank march as cavalry.

This removes choices i.e. Hoplites mounted on chariots etc

No, just a different choice! - the Cyrenean hoplites are "Mounted Infantry".  So they can be flank marched as cavalry.   They arrive on table as hoplites.

The contribution to scouting can be useful as well. 3pts a base is minimal (and optional).

Could the mounted infantry characteristic be applied to the anglo-saxon and viking armies in Britain?  There are many accounts they used horses extensively to move 'strategically'.  This may account for the speed of marching by Harold in 1066.  This would obviously be limited to non-fyrd elements of the army. In fact one of the viking armies in 866 demanded tribute in horses to allow deep raids inland.  There are also mention in the anglo-saxon chronicles of vikings bringing horses by boat with them on raids.

Has anybody ever flank marched with cavalry (other than skirmish/flexible)?

I've seen it tried a couple of times, but not done it myself.

Having 2 yellow cards count as a red for flank march arrival makes doing it a little more of an option.

Easier flank marches might be a future army trait

Love love Love this change!

As much as it saddens me that I won't be seeing a Kalapani figure on the table again, this is net a huge improvement to mounted-infantry-ne-dismountable troops.

Allowing them to scout should be a big help to armies that made heavy use of these kinds of guys, and the proposed changes to flank march might actually see some of these troops pull it off on occasion.

I'm not really sure it does. Old-dismountable foot only really got an extra 1BW of movement over two turns compared to regular foot anyway (Foot double-moves 6bw for a yellow, then advances 3bw for a white vs dismountables moving 10bw for a yellow, then dismounting while stationary as a yellow); the maths just weren't mathing. XP

Having the option to instead outflank a contingent of hoplites is (IMHO) a much more interesting choice, with the added bonus of getting the scout/PBS bonus whether you flank march them or not. : )

If there are troops where it's clear they were taxi'ed right up to the front lines, though, probably wouldn't be too hard to reclass those specific troops as cav/cam/char with proper-dismountable? (Heroic charioteers in Vedic Indian and Trojan War armies function this way already)
