Title: Feigned Flight
Post by: nikgaukroger on August 30, 2025, 06:05:36 AM
HIved this statement off from the horse archer topic as it deserves its own, and the idea does seem interesting.

Quote from: Wizard of OzChange Feigned Flight from a charge to a pursuit. Feigned Flight is a brilliant concept but a failed actuality, has anyone ever seen it work? By changing its timing and making it into a pursuit it better reflects its nature. I'd also think about allowing one unit per command to acquire it.

I'd agree that as it stands it is a failure and, in IMO, it could just be dropped from the rules at no loss - for the troops concerned the evade options in the rules to the job well enough. However, an overhauled Feigned Flight could well be a useful part of the rules, and overhauling would need to review the troops who could get it and who it affected.

I did once make someone spend a green card with it.

I think it is more useful for infantry skirmishers as it stands.

IF it was going to be changed, it would be worth considering something along the lines of: An UG with feigned flight that breaks off triggers pursuit. That would be a more explicit model of what it is supposed to represent, IMO.

Maybe just make feigned flight an army wide rule that dedicated horse archer factions have. It causes all ranged cavalry units to be treated as infantry tugs for the purpose of forced charges. So rather than the player running a cav archer army having to find really clever ways to trick an opponent into doing the one thing they need to not do (give the cav archer flank charges), instead it's the opponent who needs to find a way to prevent their army from breaking formation under the pressure.

THis would have the additional advantage of making the list writer's jobs so much easier, as infantry armies could all be deleted.

I think Manzikert's proposal is well worth considering, as well as the points cost of course.

So do I, but this will not be part of the 2026 amendments. Too many implications and not enough time to test thoroughly by October.

Introduce and spread army traits but if rather easy in some rules, MEG does cover a lot of periods.
