Title: Transition date from Middle to Neo-Assyrian period
Post by: Princeps on July 11, 2025, 10:24:35 AM
Hello,

I noticed that the transition between these periods (and the lists associated, Middle Assyrian 1211 and Early Neo-Assyrian 1314) is 883 BCE, which would correspond to the rise to power of Ashur-narsipal II and the conquests he would undertake.

Now I am no expert on the subject, but what I could find all point to historians considering the Neo-Assyrian period as beginning in 911 BCE at the death of Ashur-dan II, thus considering Adad-nirari II and Tukulti-ninurta II as the first kings of the Neo-Assyrian period.

Hope this can be helpful,
Antoine

The date is associated with military changes.  These do not always correspond to the historical eras.
