Title: Expendables, scythed Chariots
Post by: Robin on November 22, 2024, 07:41:25 AM
When are expendables removed ?
Combat, if they rout an opponent and are not damaged do they stay on.
If they are undamaged and rout an opponent do they pursue?
Do they then fight the next opponent until damaged ?
I bought and painted a pair of scythed chariots because they looked good. I know they are a cheap gimmick but am not sure of how long they last.

Also they are formed. Which makes them a little to manoeuvrable. Perhaps they should be tribal and only be allowed to wheel on a red 🤷‍♂️another point is as dev chg but poor this makes them pretty crap. Wonder if should be slightly better v cavalry (scythes) or perhaps tribal close foot if head on. Then once the initial chaos ends they should be removed 🤷‍♂️

They are removed if they are still in combat (i.e. fighting - they would be rolling combat dice) at the start of the end of turn phase (Appendix 1.G:2).

If they rout an opponent - they will pursue.  If they contact an enemy UG during the pursuit then they will be removed.  If they don't contact an enemy UG then they carry on as normal.

Removal (as opposed to breaking) doesn't trigger any KaB tests.

As for being formed, there is no obvious reason to think they were less manoeuvrable than other four-horse chariots.
Their historical performance suggests they were pretty rubbish with the occasional success. The S=Skull effect reflects this.

So if they don't contact enemy in pursuit they go again ?

Yes.  It is as if the enemy ran before the chariots ever contacted.  Very rarely happens in my experience.

Can I hijack the thread to ask an Expendable related question? Many Expendables (inc. Scythed Chariots) have a list note that they get Dev Charg in single rank. But some like Stampeding Cattle in the Songhai list (5917) don't and presumably need to be two deep to get Dev Charge pluses. Is this an omission or deliberate (eg on the basis that you need a deeper "formation" of cattle than chariots to get the same effect)?

Deliberate.

Thanks - you are very patient with people asking if the lists really mean what they say !!   :) :)

It strikes me as odd that they are removed if they contact an enemy during pursuit as any other unit would fight a charge impact round at the start of the next turn suggesting they are still moving. I assume in the rare case that they break an opponent in charge combat and pursue into a new unit in the charge phase they aren't removed and fight another impact?
From a game mechanic and value for money point of view I agree with Robin having them formed is too good as they can double move onto a flank which for me is too strong.
