Just a question. At the comp in Devizes I found out that if you have a enemy TUG directly in front of you within 1 BW but another TUG slightly stepped in front of it, but in line, so that you are a bit behind its flank you can charge diagonally do as to have 1 element contact the flank of one unit a bit and then contact the unit in front of you diagonally as well. This then means that one of the elements from the unit directly in front ends up not contacted at all. I would have thought that you were supposed to charge the unit directly in front as this seems like one of the weird alignment things that MEG was supposed to avoid. Is this deliberate or an oversight and if it is deliberate why?
It is deliberate, but as to why you'd have to ask Simon; my guess would be to allow options for game purposes.
As an aside I'd note, assuming I have understood your description, that in the case you describe the contact to the flank of the unit contacted due to the wheel in the charge would not be a flank charge even if the charge started behind the flank as the provisions of 5 I (page 60 in the PDF) would apply. You may of course know that 8)
The contact was caused just on a side edge by a wheel in a charge but Philip Powell told me that it meant he got +4 against the unit he contacted in the side and that my element dead in front only counted as an overlap against the element next to it that had contacted diagonally next to it.

as long 3.1. A file must start with its entire front edge behind the line extending the front edge of the target file at the time it is moved. The claim may therefore be affected by the order in which charges are moved.
so if Philip's base was entirely behind your tugs front edge before he started his wheeled charge then its a flank contact otherwise its counted as frontal
Why does the flank protection think like in the diagram on p62 not apply? Also explained on p60 in 5.1.3.2
Dan,
If I have understood the situation correctly, the provision on page 62 would apply and no flank charge bonus could be claimed.

I read the description as being something like this:

The charging unit starts behind the front edge of the right-hand enemy.
They make a wheel at the start of the charge and so end up like this:

Thus they have contacted the flank of the right-hand unit and 2 bases of the left hand unit.
Because of the provisions of 5 I this will not count as a flank charge - the left-hand unit provides "flank protection".
I suspect Matt may have not read the description as I have - pictures are usually best in these cases 8)
Unless I've misunderstood of course :P
You are right. That was pretty much it. He claimed a flank attack bonus and I wasn't allowed my short spears.
