Title: When to check flank protection
Post by: philfigo on March 26, 2024, 05:36:45 PM
P60 5.I  3.2 "explanation how to check"
I think it's to be checked once all moves are done (countercharges, intercepts and all charges moves) not when you declare a charge, but I'm not sure
Can you confirm?
thanks

Yes, once all charge moves have been completed, not when you declare the charge.

Would it not be better to say : when the charging unit begins to move  8)

No. In theory the unit providing the flank protection could move after the chargers have moved (unlikely I admit but not impossible) and in those circumstances they should not provide flank protection.

Lost in translation

What I mean is that for a charge to be a flank , when you start moving the charging unit during the charge phases, at the beginning of the charger's move the charger must conform to the conditions of a flank charge. Charges, counter charges , interceptions, order of charges may cancel the flank charge if conditions are not met and also a frontal charge can become a flank charge ..I hope Iam clear enough but I may miss something

You are over-complicating the situation.  Just determine whether the flank protection applies after all the charges have been moved.

So if it turns out to be protected, then it becomes a "contacted the flank but not a 'flank charge' ".
