Title: Basing 20mm figures
Post by: sultanbev on April 11, 2019, 11:42:15 AM
Hi all, am currently building a 12th Century Georgian army in 20mm plastics, because, you know, cheaper and lighter than metal.

Am using 60mm BW. For the loose order cavalry I can get 3 figures on a 60x 40mm base, which fits in with the notes in the rules, and looks okay.
But doing the close order militia (which aren't in the lists, even though mentioned in the descriptive text - but that's a separate post) but the suggested 4 foot figures on a 60x 30mm base looks crap, more like they are in open order. 8 figures in 2 ranks looks more like it, even better on a 60x 40mm base.
So would that be acceptable? I gather that base depths don't matter as much. Would it be a problem the infantry being on the same depth as a cavalry?

Base depths are not critical.  I suggest you do what looks best.  When playing a game, make sure you explain to your opponent whether troops are in close or loose order.

Base sizes were originally specified by Wargames Research Group back in the 1970s.  They generally haven't changed because of the issue of players having to re-base all their troops.  Some rulesets have decided to go with different base sizes, but this risks the rules not being adopted.

If it were not for the legacy effects of past rules I would go for 20mm for foot as per rules for 15mm. Makes basing easier with the larger 15mms and looks nicer. Then use no of figures for close vs. loose.  Smaller figures look better compacted.

But as RJC says just go with what looks best. Not a massive easy as long as close to recommended.  Having seen your 20mm I think the milita will look better with extra.  Maybe try 5 or 6 on a 30mm deep interpesred front and rear. I did that for some once and they looked great.  Close order but not so orderly ...
