Hi,
after the friday game I have few questions about the ending position a commander base :
the base move at the speed of skirmish cavalry
the base want to join an UG
the base contact it but cannot finish at the back of the file
where the base can be positionned?
is the base can gain extra moving distance to join the UG?
if it can't?
does it still count with the UG?
does it stop his move a gnat away from the UG?
thanks in advance for your answers.

Generals bases when with a UG must be with a file, therefore, the general's base must be able to get to either the front or rear of the file as these are the placement positions per the rules - there is no extra movement to get there. So if they cannot get to such a position they are not with the UG.

I think the rules on where generals are positioned are one of the most overlooked rules sections; seems to need explaining quite often.
So it is not enough to join a file , one has to be able to join either the rear or front base and only on the front or back, not the side ?

The only way to join a file is to be positioned at the front or rear - being on the side is not becoming (joining) a part of the file.
Also most people do forget that a general may not make any double moves unless accompanying an UG that double moves
The answer is clear
But as this section is not very well documented, I asked myself several questions
I assumed the general's base was more of a marker, but maybe I misinterpreted
1) does the base of the general have an orientation?
Often when a general leaves a broken unit and tries to join another unit, he is in the opposite direction of that unit
For example, must it imperatively join the front of a file by its back face or any face that is in correct position of placement can it be valid
Should we measure its movement of the front face or the one that moves the most, in this example it would be the back face that should make a 180 turn
2) How does a general move?
Must he use the table of movements (wheel, 90 or 180) or does he make movements by straight lines, measuring from his front face or from any face (orientation?)
I know that it's not the most important in the rule, but it's better when it's clear
thank you
I agree that the section could be better documented.
1) Generals do not have an orientation.
2) Generals move by straight lines.
Richard
thank you for your answer
it's clearer for me now
Related question: When the general is at the back of a file and the file turns 180 degrees, is he now at the front of the file, or does he flip to the opposite end of the file?
The rules don't cover it explicitly but if the UG makes a turn (90 or 180) the general may be relocated to any file front or back.
I think with a 180 he ought to stay with the file he starts with.

Yes, maybe in which case I think he still should be allowed to be either at the front or back.
Richard
Agreed.
