Title: Anglo-Danish - Mixed Tugs Question
Post by: IanN on December 06, 2023, 04:37:57 PM
In the Anglo-Danish list there is a note that states :

Note : Huscarls (not Thegns) in Shieldwall, Select Fyrd AND Great Fyrd may be mixed in the same TuG of 6, 8 or 9 bases. If used, elements of Huscarls, Select Fyrd and Great Fyrd must be easily distinguished.  Elements in a mixed TUG including Great Fyrd may not be given the Shove characteristic.

My interpretation is that mixed units must contain Huscarls, Select Fyrd and Great Fyrd. Is this correct ?

An interesting one as I would have read it that Huscarls may be mixed with select Fyrd AND/OR great fyrd

I've used this list previously and have a third different reading of what the note means i.e. you can mix any or all of the three types in the same TUG so Huscarls+Select Fyrd, Huscarls+Great Fyrd, Select Fyrd+Great Fyrd or Huscarls+Select Fyrd+Great Fyrd.

Simon Stokes - that is how I have interpreted it, but that is not what it says. There is no 'or' in the statement - hence my request for clarification.

Simon's interpretation is what is intended.  Don't agree an or is needed.  You can mix 1, 2 and 3 together.

With my boardgamer head on the sentence "Huscarls (not Thegns) in Shieldwall, Select Fyrd AND Great Fyrd may be mixed in the same TuG of 6, 8 or 9 bases." indicates to me that any or all types can be in the same TuG. The key is the word may and the comma between Huscarls and Select Fyrd.

The second sentence reinforces that you may or may not have Great Fyrd in the TuG because TuGs that do have them cannot have shove.

Isn't international English a fantastic thing. Different people see things in different ways.

Huscarls (not Thegns) in Shieldwall, Select Fyrd AND Great Fyrd may be mixed in the same TuG of 6, 8 or 9 bases, IN ANY COMBINATION. If used, elements of Huscarls, Select Fyrd and Great Fyrd must be easily distinguished.  Elements in a mixed TUG including Great Fyrd may not be given the Shove characteristic.

thid would clarifywhat is intended
