Title: Project to help new players learn MeG
Post by: lionheartrjc on November 27, 2023, 02:05:44 PM
Learning MeG isn't easy.

We have an idea of creating a simple version of MeG that would help new players take up MeG.   I have called it MeG Eruditio  (Eruditio being the Latin for learning).

Essentially it would be a simpler version of MeG Pacto.  My thoughts at the moment include:

C-in-C but no other generals. Probably go 4 cards for mediocre, to 7 for legendary.  No instinctive/professional.
No artillery or battlewagons, no loose/close/flexible.  Keep drilled, formed, tribal, skirmisher.   Just protected or armoured.  Superior, Average or Poor.
All UGs are treated as 1 base facing in one direction.  SuG = 2 wounds to break.  TuG = 3 wounds to break.
Very simple action table. Advance directly ahead, advance with wheel, turn 90 or 180.  No double moves. Block move for 2 cards.  No control pursuit, break off.
Skirmish, but no run away option.
Terrain is good, rough (minus for long spear, pike, cavalry) and difficult (for skirmishers only).
Shooting pretty much as Pacto.
Combat pretty much as Pacto.
Simplified characteristics. Only include Shove, Shieldwall, DC, ME, Shield Cover.

Include 20 simple army lists with the rules (limited choices) with a very simplified points system (100 pts in Maximus = 1 point in introductory version).
Persian; Classical Greek, Republican Roman, Carthaginian, Successor, Gallic, Imperial Roman, Sassanid Persian, Late Roman, Hunnic, Anglo-Danish, Norman, Byzantine, Crusader; Ayyubid.

Would welcome input from non-UK countries if they think this might help with adoption.

The challenge of course is to decide what to leave out but still make it a worthwhile game.  We would want to keep concepts as identical to other MeG rules as we can even if some details would change. Produce on the lines of the PDF editions at a cheap price.

Looking for positive contributions/suggestions please.  If it doesn't interest you, don't bother to tell everyone! If you think it is the wrong approach to attracting new players, fine, but come up with something else positive please.
