Title: Pike / Handgun combined units clarification
Post by: Dirkhrod on November 17, 2023, 10:51:06 PM
Hi guys,

With the risk of sounding daft, I do not understand how Pikes and Handgunners work in combined units. Let us take the Late Swiss list for example.

Handgunners can be separate SuGs or up to 3 can be folded into each pike or up to 2 into each halberd formation by adding "Experienced/Firearm" to those troops. There are two ways to represent this: 1) ideally replace 1 pike or halberd with a handgunner, or 2) to avoid rebasing place a handgunner skirmish base in front of the file containing them.

So let's say I have a TuG of 12 Pike, where I replace 3 with Handgunners.

This means that the 12 x Pike at 142 pts now cost what ?

1 Do I have to pay 152 instead of 142 for all 12 bases ?
2 Do I have to pay 152 instead of 142 for 3 bases I replaced and the rest are 142 ?
3 Do I have to pay 3 bases of 40 pts (for the handgunners as per list) in addition to the pikemen ?

Please let me know which is the correct option for Armybuilder. I haven't seen any army using this rule actually written in Armybuilder and I am not sure how I should handle the costs of the upgrade. My personal assumption is that I should use 9 bases of 142 and 3 of 152 (with shooting ability), but I would like this confirmed.

Also, regarding the actual models:

1 Do I place 9 bases of pikes and 3 of handgunners ?
2 Do I place 12 bases of pikes and use the handgunners as markers ?
3 Do I place 9 bases of pikes and 3 of combined pike / handgun ?

I assume I can pick any of these options, but just wanted to be sure.

You are correct, if you choose, the TUG consists of 9 bases of pikemen (at 142 points) and 3 bases of pikemen with handgunners (at 152 points).

In terms of representation, I would recommend either option 2 or option 3.

Hope that helps.
