Title: NOOB CLARIFICATION
Post by: DaveB on July 03, 2023, 03:37:51 PM
Hi All

I'm new to MeG but not wargaming, having multiple periods in my collection, Napoleonic, ACW, WW2.

I have owned a Macedonian 15mm Army for nearly forty years, and recently decided to buy a Persian Army to challenge them. Part of this process was to choose a set of rules and MeG was the one I selected.

I have a couple of Noob questions as I am starting to base my new fellas.

I understand 4 figs for close, 3 loose, and 2 skirmishers, but these following terms confuse me as to what amount of figures should be used and which formations they can be used in?

CAVALRY
Formed Loose  = My guess A MIX OF 3 figs & 2?
Drilled loose     =  4 & 3?
Formed Flexible = 4 & 3?
Tribal loose        = 3 & 2?

INFANTRY
Drilled loose    = 4 & 3?
Formed Loose  = 3 & 2?
Tribal loose      = 3 & 2?
Drilled close     = 4 on all?
Tribal close       = 4?
Skirmishers      = 2?

Sorry if it seems obvious, but I don't want to mess up basing a new army for a dedicated rule set.

Best to all.

Hi, welcome to MeG  8)

Drilled, Formed and Tribal are "training" classifications and do not affect the suggested number of figures per base. So for example, all Loose cavalry have a suggested 3 per base regardless of whether they are Drilled, Formed or Tribal.

Flexibles are different as it is suggested that you have a mix of bases so as to be able to show with the front rank bases which formation the troops are in. So for Flexible cavalry a mix of bases with 3 and 2 figures per base to show whether they are in Loose or Skirmisher formation and for Flexible infantry a mix of 4 and 3 figures per base to show Close and Loose formation. However, other ways of showing the difference such as some form of marker is also perfectly acceptable.

Hope that helps.

This, for example, is one of my units of Flexible cavalry.

With the 3 figures per base at the front they will be Loose, if the 2 per base ones are at the front thye will be Skirmisher.

They could be Drilled, Loose, or Tribal (although I don't think there are any Tribal Flexible cavalry in the lists).

nikgaukroger

You are a star sir.

Can you advise on IMMORTALS -= Drilled loose.

I'm thinking all at 3 per base?

What i do :
lose = 3 per base
close inf = 4 per base
Flex inf = 4 per base front rank 3 per base rearrank in in close formation, invert if in lose
Flex cav = 3 per base and 2 per base combinded (1 base of loose, one base of skirmishers) same system as flex inf
Close cav = depends on miniatures if the look is ok with 4 i put 4 otherwise 3
loose cav = 3 per base
Skirmishers = 2 per base

Immortals are a bit different as they are half Drilled Flexible and half Drilled Loose.

The Loose are easy as 3 to a base does them nicely.

The Flexibles you could do as 3 (Loose) or 4 (Close) and have some sort of marker for when they are in the other formation. It isn't expected that you'd have separate bases for both  :)

I have some Chinese infantry that are similar and I based all mine as 3 to a base and have a separate single figure on a round base to put next to the unit when the front rank is in Close formation.
