Rules are rules and never perfect, never finished ..always being discussed especially now with all the social media . MEG is a well balanced rule but my opinion is that we could discuss a next evolution of the rule and also say here what we would like to see evolve !
I am aiming at the rules, not the army lists .
I admit I would like the shooting rules to be modified and it would greatly help shooty armies to have the real effect they could have.
I would upgrade a colour when shooting entirely in the flank/behind the flank and or rear of a TUG unless it is in ORB
Also shield cover should not have any impact on shooting if behind the flank or rear unless in ORB. Pavise already works that way so why not shieldcover ?
So a small mounted army can threaten the flanks as it did historically !
Charging in the flank gives a +4 bonus, melee in the flank gives a +2 bonus ..so why does shooting in the flank not benefit the shooter ?
I am 50 cm wide, but only 25 cm deep. I'm twice as difficult to hit from the flank.
I am aiming MAXIMUS 8)

Some wargamers are 50 cm wide but 75 cm deep! It takes all sorts....

Why would it be more difficult to shoot at you in the flank ? By the same reasoning it would make flank charges more difficult so what's the essence of the problem ?
The question, the heart of the question, the core is : what would you think of an upgrade in colour shooting for flank and rear shooting + quid of 360° shieldcover ? does it seem Ok for you , can you live with it or would you prefer a rule modification 8)
I am in favour of a rule modification because the principle is already in the rules ( Pavise and advantages for charges and melees ) .
It would certainly make horse archers a lot more interesting!
Well we are being politely ignored 8)
Next time I will impolitely ignore you....
There are no plans to change the rules for the foreseeable future. I actually support the idea of a greater impact from shooting behind flank or rear, but I am not going to lose sleep over it. Wargamers make too much of an issue about flanks. Most ancient warfare was about defeating your opponent frontally, not about trying to sneak around their flank or rear.

If you don't think horse archers are interesting at the moment then you're doing it wrong ;)

So says the specialist but it is an uneasy/difficult army type to master

I will not loose sleep . But many here discussed the topic ( and do not even come on the forum ) . Even if most ancient warfare is about defeating the opponent frontally, smallish actions and flank shooting did have an impact .
The rules are good but still can evolve a little
It's a game , let us enjoy the game for what it is ...it'snot really that realistic but a very good game

The difficulty to master is one of the factors which makes them interesting.
