Hello all, I would appreciate input from people with experience. I am thinking of flying rather than driving to a competition as that would save me up to 24 hours of travel. My query is, how best to secure figures for a plane trip so that they arrive in some semblance of order? I imagine that given the number of players active on these pages who travel internationally for competitions there would be a wealth of experience that I would like to tap into. As stated above, I would be very grateful for any and all advice.

I use magnets, so either the figure base is magnetic sheet and the box is steel or "magnet-receptive sheet" or vice versa.
Security check people will probably want to look inside when you go through the X-ray machine. Once, I had a base taken for a "spear sharpness test", so don't take those Swiss with steel needles used as pikes.
Beware of Xray machine operators tipping your bag over 90 degrees. Luckily my magnets were strong enough to hold most of the figures when this happened to me. A prominent "This way up" label would be a good idea.
Once I flew with my Kyrenean Greek army in hold baggage. It was packed in foam cut to fit the figures. The more delicate items like chariots were still on magnetic bases in the hand luggage, though, IIRC.
First all bases are with a magnet and the armies are in a biscuit tin box 8)
I add foam or newspaper sheets
It may surprise you but I use a cabinluggage backpack so yes the miniatures are 'on a side' but it never caused any damage .
I can sent pictures on how I do it .
I use a Eastpak cabin luggage and never use anything else than cabin luggage
In that luggage I put the travell terrains, dice, rules, rules and miniatures

I use magnets in an Army Case bag, this one (https://shop.army-case.com/miniature-carrying-case/a-case-hybrid-messenger/).
The bag fits under an airplane seat (but sideways, so careful if you do not have strong magnets under the minis) and in the overhead compartment.
Each tray (37x18.9 cm) can theoretically accomodate 81 infantry bases, although weapons that go over the border of the base, such as long spears, will limit that. I think a conservative estimate is 55-65 infantry bases per tray. For example, last time I used it, my Jap Nobunaga army had 1 camp, 3 generals, 8 cavalry and 52 infantry (40 of which LSp), and I needed about 1-1/2 tray.
Height-wise, the cas has 6 slots for trays (although delivered with only 3 trays without supplement), but if you have anything higher than a 15-mm foot standard bearer, you will need a double space, so 3 trays max.
All in all, a quite pricey but nice solution. On the other hand, having seen badhabum's more "handmade" solution personnaly, it works fine as well.

EDIT : it also has an outside pouch where you can easily fit a notebook, some paper (although not as thick as the POD), dice, tokens and cards

I use a KR multicase and carry a small tray to organise the figure on once uncased
Worked it out, I'm obviously suffering from a brain freeze.
