Title: Early Imperial Romans at Derventio
Post by: lionheartrjc on March 24, 2019, 09:59:40 PM
With a classical period theme, I took Early Imperial Roman with Chatti allies.

The army consisted of
Talented and 2 Mediocre Professional general.  Talented ally general.
3 x 6 Legionaries, Drilled Flexible, Average, Protected, Impact Weapon, Melee Expert, Shield Cover
2 x 6 Auxilia, Drilled Flexible, Average, Protected, Short Spear, Unskilled Javelin, Melee Expert, (1 with Shoot & Charge)
1 x 6 Cavalry, Drilled Loose, Superior, Protected, Short Spear, Unskilled Javelin, Melee Expert, Shoot & Charge
1 x 4 Cavalry, Drilled Loose, Average, Protected, Short Spear, Unskilled Javelin
4 x 8 Chatti warriors, Tribal Flexible, 2 Superior 6 Average, Protected, Devastating Chargers.

The army generally deployed with the Chatti in the center.  The Romans were on either flank of the Chatti, each commanded by a Mediocre general with the C-in-C floating.

My first game was against Spartacus slave revolt.  The Chatti faced the Gladiators and Slaves with Roman Equipment.  On my left, was Spartacus with 4 TuGs of slaves with Roman equipment and the cavalry.  On my right were poor slaves.  I sent forward the Romans against these and were then able to turn the flank on the gladiators.  The cavalry from this wing went behind the gladiators and hit the slaves in the rear.  I broke three TuGs in the same bound just before time expired to get the win.

My second game was against Sassanid Persian.  My opponent massed his cataphracts against my Romans on my left and his horse archers against my Chatti.  I used the Chatti to force back the horse archers and then moved the Romans from my right to my left to hit the cataphracts in the flank.  The Chatti got through to sack the enemy camp.  Another win.

My third game was another Sassanid Persian.  My opponent deployed cataphracts on both wings and horse archers in the center.  He also had a UG of elephants.  The terrain worked well for me with gullies on both wings.  I used the Romans to face off the cataphracts, advanced the Chatti against the horse archers.  The Chatti were hit by the elephants.  I lost two UGs before getting a final lucky wound that broke the elephants.  My cavalry reinforced the Chatti and were able to break through the horse archers and sack the enemy camp.  However I was close to breaking.  A KAB test from sacking the camp got me a wound to break one of the cataphract units and win the game.  If I had missed (and the unit was superior, so a green dice) I would have broken the following turn.

My final game was against Alasdair and his Lowland Thracian.  Alasdair deployed his Bastarnae ally against my Chatti,  massed his superior cavalry on my left, and the remaining Thracians on my right.  This game went right down to the wire.  I broke 6 TuGs with two more a wound off breaking before my army broke.
