Title: Flexible free charge
Post by: LawrenceG on March 20, 2023, 08:54:01 AM
5.C.4  Free charges do not cost any cards to declare, and are allowed in addition for the following situations:
.
.
. any SuG with an enemy SuG within 1 BW directly ahead.

Can a flexi TUG in SUG form use this free charge? 3.B only mentions forced charges (3.B.3).

Also it's not explicit whether they can do prompted charges against TUGs.

A TuG in skirmish formation is still a TuG for charge purposes.  So it gets a free charge for charging SuGs within 1BW directly ahead.

They can also declare charges against TuGs even when SuGs cannot. This is often risky (since the TuG will claim +2 vs skirmishers) but can work with flank charges in particular.

They are normally missile focussed, so no free charge vs SuGs within 1 BW, according to 5.C.4 first bullet.

Which leads to the somewhat odd situation where a SUG could have a free charge but a TUG would have to pay for it.

Hadn't clocked that one - and it has always been thus (in the Compendium).

I think this may be an "unintended consequence" of the rules....

Been pondering this and, whilst it is clearly what the rules say, I am somewhat concerned about its impact. Basically, I don't think it has ever been understood to be this and so not used, and I fear the impact could be significant and affect the game negatively.

The errata has been updated.  A one word change to 3.B:3.  Flexible mounted in skirmisher formation are treated as SuGs for their own forced charges.   Delete the word forced.

This also solves the issue and allows TuGs in skirmisher formation to free charge SuGs within 1BW.
