Title: Question on Basing from New Player
Post by: The Numidian on March 19, 2019, 10:32:42 PM
Hi All,
New to the site, and am thinking about taking up MeG. At present play 'Impetus' for my ancient 15mm wargaming and like using the 8cm wide bases with variable depth's. Is it possible to 'convert' MeG to use my 'Impetus' based wargame units ?.
Not sure where I should have posted my question regarding the rules, as a newbie to MeG, but thought here might be a good place to get an expert MeG player to give me some advice !.

Regards,
            Steve.

Hi Steve,

Best to start a new topic (which I have done).

Glad you are interested in MeG.  I can understand why you wouldn't want to re-base figures.

Base depths don't matter so much in MeG, but the frontage is more of an issue.  8cm wide bases are in effect double-width.  Since all units have to be at least 2BW wide, the double-width base in effect provides the core of the unit.  What might work is creating 4cm wide bases without figures, showing the actual position of the bases for game purposes.  It wouldn't be perfect, but might create a good enough visual effect.

So a 2 base wide unit is represented by figures.
So a 3 base wide unit is represented by an 8cm width of figures and a 4cm wide file of bases placed next to it.
A 4 base wide unit is represented by two 8cm width bases.

A casualty marker might be needed to record base losses.

It may need a bit of marking to note where flanks have been turned, but with a bit of ingenuity it should be possible.

Hi

Delighted you are up for trying MeG.

Actually we have played with Impetus basing down here.
* Just use the 8cm base as a double width base or even double width band double depth.
* Then keep track of wounds in total with a wound stack until the TuG breaks.
* You need a little method for knowing which bases have gone - we put a small red pebble onto the part of the impetus base to show that.
* Worked fine without rebasing as long as you accept that bit of extra work.

NOTE If you are prepared to not worry about which bases are lost then skip the last bit.
it works, but all troops needing depth are a bit better value for money as they don't lose factors.
Pikes especially.  But if not playing comps where points balance is vital then its ok.
Just gradually adjust a bit for it and don't stand in front os Superior Pikes with anything!

Hi Si and Richard,
Thanks for the replies. I will give your suggestions a try. We try to use a lot of figure based, or disguised markers in our games of Impetus to mark actions, and small numbered counters to mark reductions in strength . So we could just adapt these for MeG.
Really like the PBS for deciding terrain and deployment in MeG. Will probably wait until April to purchase V2 of MeG, so I have the up to date rule set !.
I used to be a member of Burnley Wargame club in the 80's and 90's ( showing my age ),and played many a micro tank WW2 game using Bev's own rules ( Mark Bevis ). Those were the days !!.
Is there anywhere on the forum to meet/ communicate with MeG players reasonably near where I live ?.I live in Lyme Regis, Dorset, but regularly play wargames with other gamer's in near Dorchester.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated,
                                                        Steve.

Still playing the micro-armour games Steve, mostly moderns now, with 10mm and 15mm for WW2. Same rules set, just a CWC/Warmaster style command system added and firing by platoons rather than individual tanks.
