Title: effects of terrain PG 152
Post by: badhabum on October 16, 2022, 11:48:20 AM
The concept of line of fighting is pretty simple and clear  except that it does not help the defender in one specific situation

If I have hoplites deployed along a marsh, hust at the border waiting for the opponent legions to charge ( flexible in loose order ) and the roman does charge and has to stay in the marsh, the concept enable the attacker to choose the fighting ground and he will choose the difficult terrain while in fact the hoplites did wait him just at the limit to be able to fight in the open while the romans would still be struggling the terrain .

More funny, so the roman could benefit from it but n,ext fighting file, the Greek could choose to fight in the open and the roman would still be unaffected by terrain ..so that rule is to the full benefit of loose or flexible TUGs

So using terrain to slow down an assault and benefit from it to amper enemy assault is very complex

Is that the intend ?

Hi,

Apparently no response yet...
But your situation is described in par 7 of page 152, no ? 'Lining the edge is by definition IN terrain and will affect both sides.'
So no choice.

I believe 'choice' in par 4 is only when any of the bases are partially in terrain (and thus not lining the edge).

Or am I missing something in this story ?

I am unclear what sort of response was expected.  The rules say what they say, and just because you expect them to say something different doesn't make them change..,

If you are aligned, you cannot be in terrain that your opponent isn't because you share the same line of fighting.
If close order troops are behind a marsh (not in it) they don't want to go into the marsh. Flexible  infantry would want to switch to close order before coming out of the marsh.  If it is a mix of close and loose order or close order and cavalry troops that stay behind the marsh then the flexible infantry have a bit more of a challenge if they want to come out of the marsh.

If it's a mix of close order and mounted, then wouldn't you simply switch to close order in the marsh and then charge?
That doesn't seem like much of a challenge.
