Title: Tournament game endpoints
Post by: accard on September 17, 2022, 02:08:04 PM
With time limits on tournament games, is there a standard process as to what happens when time is called?

Interested in what variations there may be.

The general approach followed in the UK is to end the game in the PHASE in which time is called.

Another approach would be to end the game at the end of the TURN, the drawback being that this might take some considerable time if you had just started a turn.
In theory games could be stopped in the current SUB-PHASE but that would be a bit odd.
In theory you could stop games immediately time is callled, but that would create issues around any outstanding KAB tests etc.

Some competitions use a fixed time e.g. 3 or 3 1/4 hours.  Other competitions add a variable amount onto a fixed time (perhaps by rolling 3 dice and subtracting 3 to give a range from 0 to 15 minutes) with the idea of stopping players manipulating their game play.  I probably complete 90% of my games within the time period anyway.  In the UK we have a lot of experienced players who play quite quickly.  Against less experienced players who naturally play more slowly (no criticism here, everyone has to learn) I do change my style of play to keep things simple to help speed the game up. I may risk losing more UGs but the faster game play compensates and improves the score.

One of the reasons I like MeG over some other rules is that you generally get a lot of action and from a scoring perspective it pays to get stuck in.  At Britcon last month (a 5-round competition), I won 2 games and lost 3 but scored well (10pts, 10pts and 7pts from memory) in all three losses to end well placed.

I would also point to Universal Rule 6 on page 78.

Thanks for that!

Missed Universal Rule 6 completely.
