The situation was the following : a samurai TUG front line samurai sup and behind two ranks of average followers
The unit is hit frontally and to the flank.
Fontally only one base is in contact a SUP samurai base.
That base is killed by the flank charge
The player argued rightly that he could not remove the base otherwise the TUG would lose contact with the TUG is is fighting frontally
But he wanted to ermove "any" other base in his unit and so an average one
The wording says any other base but should it not be of the same type/category ?
Covered in the rules...

You remove the front rank base and everybody else moves up. Contact with the unit is not lost. So the Superior base is removed.
If there weren't any average bases behind the superior base then any other base can be removed and it could be an average base (owning player chooses). This however is a very rare situation so just live with it.

But point 1.3 says "any" bases so any of the same type or "any" even average
1.3 kicks in if removing a base as per either 1.1 or 1.2 (or, indeed, 1.4 I guess) means contact is lost - then the any other base option applies.

But by following point 1.2 the UG remains in contact so 1.3 never gets to apply.
