Title: Who Breaks First
Post by: Ludwig on July 07, 2022, 08:39:57 PM
Had another friendly game with the following event that we could Not clarify in the rules:
My worthy opponent had the initiative during the Mele phase.
Both his unit and mine were a kill away from breaking.
We both rolled at the same time (that's how we have always played).
Both units broke at the same time.
The Question is:
Does the player with the Initiative roll first thus breaking my unit before I roll?
OR do we both roll at the same time thus causing both units to break.
Of course, a broken unit can no longer fight.
And does the same apply to shooting which I have always played as being simultaneous in terms of die roll.
All of the above is of course element by element.
Thanks,
Lenney
Thanks

Both units can break simultaneously.  In combat, you roll file by file and stop immediately when one or both units break, whereas in shooting you roll all shooting and then units are broken.

In a sub-phase, the active player acts first and then players alternate.  If it matters (and it normally doesn't), the active players makes a KaB test, then the non-active player until all KaB tests are finished, then the active players moves a router, then the non-active player, and so on then you move pursuits etc.  (Page 77).  It means a mutual destruction is quite rare.

We had a variation on this in a friendly game a week or so ago.  Same situation as above except only one of the units broke, mine, but in his eagerness to finish me off my opponent threw in his army commander who was killed in the fight. This causes a KAB test on all units in the army and it was those KAB tests that had the potential to break his last unit before his army in turn broke. It was a friendly game so we did what seemed sensible and I gave the game to my opponent and then rolled the KAB dice anyway just to see what would have happened. Were we right?

The test for killing a general is immediate (see the QRS).  Therefore if the general is killed as the enemy unit breaks, the KABs must be completed before the game is over.  This may result in a mutual destruction.
