Hopefully some one will be able to help on this point, the above army list lets you upgrade Kinsmen cavalry to lance armed but what does this do?
Does it make them charging lancers or should that have mounted long spear?

It makes them "Devastating Chargers" with the benefits of that. And you can add "Mele Expert" If there is no new or changed weapon then there is no additional weapon type. The lance is covered by the DC characteristic.
