Title: Artillery
Post by: martymagnificent on February 23, 2019, 01:29:18 AM
A question I asked elsewhere but should probably be here

I've always been a little perplexed by the KAB test for units charging guns. is it:

a test per gun base you are charging?

a single test for any unit that is charging any number of guns?

a test for each unit of guns that you charge?

Consider a 4 wide unit charging 2x2 wide units of guns. Is it 1 test, 2 tests or 4 tests? Do the hits from these tests count for slowing effects?

9.11.C6 (p104) says Guns and Cannons (not Catapults, Bolt Shooters or Rockets) can claim a KAB test for each base firing on anyone charging them.

A SuG of 3 cannon is charged frontally by a UG so as it would contact all 3 cannon.  The cannon can claim 3 KAB tests.
So a SuG of 2 cannon is charged frontally by two UGs so that 1 cannon shoots at each UG.  This would result in 1 KAB test for each UG.
A SuG of 2 cannon is charged in the rear.  It cannot claim any KAB tests.

Thnaks, do the hits (and s results) generated count for slowing the chargers?

No.  They are KAB tests!  Any slowing effects apply as KAB test slowing effects.

So work out the slowing effect separately for the shooting and then the KAB test.

A SuG of 2 cannon shoot at a TuG of 6 infantry 3 wide.

The cannon rolls an S and a Blank from shooting.   This causes a 1BW slowing effect on the infantry TUG (due to the extra slowing effect of S).
The KAB tests roll an S and a Wound.   This causes a further 1BW slowiing effect as well as the Wound (note the S does not cause an extra slowing effect in a KAB test but this is a 1 per 2 files slowing effect).

Hope this is clear.

Exactly what RJC said.

So the intent is Guns/Cannons are not hugely potent at range but are hard to charge for anything that isn't superior.
Will tend to stall unless a general is pushing them on with all his might.

a suplementary question...

with a TUG of infantry containing a single gun stand (cf Ming) , does the file containing the gun have to be charged to generate the KAB, or just the TUG as a whole?

IIRC you don't actually add a gun stand to the TUG, instead a base of infantry gets the shooting capability.

Not sure of that makes a difference  :P

pthhhhh

ok

if the infantry stand that has been replaced by an artillery model and given a shooting capability is not in the file that is charged...etc

So yes add the cannon to an infantry base but by all means put a cannon base in to show it.
Mine I am doing as a ballistae with 2 legionaries for the romans.

If the base is charged they get the KaB.
On basis it says cannons get a KaB is charged and that is the base with a cannon..

so that base would need to be in the front rank, and if there is no contact on that file, there is no KAB?

Rear rank I think as can always shoot over own UG ranks.
Just can't shoot over another UG like catapults.
But haven't rules handy so stand to be corrected.

its more about triggering the KAb for charging guns

does the gun base have to be contacted by the (planned) charge?

Ah I see. Yes a good question.
Would need to be in front rank to get the KaB benefit.
What is the base in total?
