Title: Charging a flank and aligning
Post by: Francis Small on November 16, 2021, 07:12:08 AM
In the diagram below, unit A starts in position 1 with all files eligible for a flank charge on B. It wheels and a single file contacts the flank in position 2. Then it aligns to position 3. As far as I know, the alignment is legal because the base initially in frontal contacts moves less than 1 BW. Note how at the end of the alignment there are two files in flank contact with B. Can unit A then fight with two files in charge combat?

Yes, as long as the front rank base moves up to (not including) 1 BW and the rear ranks don't move more than 2BW (see glossary - page 212).

Interesting, that is a nice move (but not so for B, :)).
It shows I still have a lot to learn, although my tribal troops are most of the time not that subtle in their moves.

Turns out I was player B, and I asserted at the time that A (hi Dave!) could do nothing close to resembling this. Afterwards I figured out I was probably wrong, and Dave gave me a proper thrashing regardless. The notion that he could have turned a single contact point into two charge combats occurred to me later. A subtle difference to how 15mm and 20mm depth bases play.

On that note, the clarries read
QuoteThe 1BW restriction for front rank bases only applies to bases that are in contact with enemy, not contiguous files.

The 1BW restriction clearly applies to the front rank base of the leftmost red unit file and not to that of the rightmost file. The front rank base of the middle file does not start in contact but ends in contact - but I'm presuming since it does not start in contact it can move up to 2BW. Is this correct?
