Can I get some guidance on visibility,
take the example of some infantry in tall crops (infantry visible at 3BW), lets say they are 1 BW from the edge
Are these statements true
- They can not be seen by any UG unless that UG is within 3 BW of them (I think that is clearly true, the 3BW distance applies to absolute distance, not distance inside terrain)
- They can see any non infantry unit outside of the terrain to their front - so they can see a cavalry unit at 4Bw away but the cav unit can not see them (again I think that is clear in the rules0
- An infantry unit 4 BW can be seen by the unit in the crops but can not see them (This I am not sure of, does the visibility work both ways or only apply to the what the unit being looked at is in)
Thanks

It is correct.
You can rationalise it this way : one UG is in cover/ambush and waiting. They may have some few scouts a bit forward hidden by the crops, trees, vineyards to keep them informed . Also an UG in the open, possibly moving will make much noise, dust and so on . So the UG in cover will be aware of them .
And the rule is simple : the unit in cover can be seen from X distance .
I hope it helps

It implies you can be shot at but cannot shoot in response. Note, visibility doesn't affect your ability to charge, only the ability to shoot. It also doesn't affect moves, e.g. for a double move you still have to stop at 4BW away. (Awareness of an enemy but not seeing them is the rationale behind this).

Thank you, its all clear now.
This is an old question but during Grand Helvetika I had a discussion about visiblility and should have asked RJC but completely forgot as during the game it became irrelevant.
I was told that the "new" way to interpret visibility in terrain was that the distance did apply to and from terrain . So that a unit in terrain also had it's visibility range reduced.
I perhaps missed something either in the rules or on the forum as this old discussion says the contrary
So what's the right way to do it ?
I misled you at Helvetica. Some changes to the terrain table will avoid this problem in future.
Richard
OK
So if I understand correctly vision INTO terrain is impaired, vision OUT OF terrain is not
