Title: Mixed Tug movement
Post by: jasonbroomer on August 10, 2021, 07:56:09 PM
When a mixed tug, say front rank long spear, back rank bw, contracts to reduce the number of files:

Is there any restriction to the new formation? I.e. can you have a front rank of two lsp with two bw behind or do you have to go lsp, bw, lsp, bw?

Lsp and bow - byzantines?

The M6 move certainly says "in behind" and so that would, IMO, be LSp, Bw, LSp, Bw in your example.

M8 specifically says you can redress ranks so you could create LSp, LSp, Bw, Bw.

Lsp, lsp would also be behind....

It would be both in behind and in front - therefore, I think is no go.

No.  I would not permit this as an umpire.

how about when you turn 90?

so

AAA
BBB

turns 90

is it

AB
AB
AB

or

AA
BB
BA

I have been playing it as

AB
AB
AB

Have I been cheating for 3 year?

A 90 degree turn includes "redress ranks" which I have always played as per the M1 so you get to choose what your front rank is.

BTW if 2 deep you'll only be 2 wide after a 90 degree turn (unless a 9+ base unit).

good point well made, but that would be the impact of running mixed 9s last weekend :)

as the phrase 'redress ranks' is missing from M10 and M11 does this mean those formations of mixed troops now end up with their poor dross in the front rank, at least for a 180 turn with move?

M11 says "As M9" so IMO includes redress ranks.

M10 I was hoping nobody would check  :o  I suspect this is an omission (and just after we've done a clarification update) but as written no redressing ...

So does this mean the Nik Byz Skutari 8 strong cannot go 2 wide with  4 Longspear at the front and 4 bow behind, even at deployment?

Nothing stopping them doing that.

I guess it must be in specific lists where there is any benefit to swapping the ranks around vs say a crusader mixed spear / crossbow formation which, unless I've misunderstood, would get no benefit whatsoever given the front rank of spears / crossbow shoot at full capacity as crossbows and fight at full capacity as spears depending on what they are doing. In this case it seems like the rear rank of crossbows is really only the unit marker so the mixed formation is visibly different to the non-mixed spear / crossbow units.
