I make a viking list of 5 Huscarls(978 points each unit)at 6 stand .
now i buy a berserker 4 stands for 540.
if i add 1 berserker stand to a Huscarl unit, i must remove a Huscarl stand to make room for the Berserker, right? so i lose 163 pts worth of Huscarl stand? if i replace 4 for Huscarl stands for Berserkers i lose 642 pts. even if i paid 540 for 4 berserker stands i am losing 642 of Huscarl. that doesn't seem right.
or do i just replace Huscarl stand for berserkers stands straight up without purchasing the berserkers for 540 pts?
please let me know.
The list is as written, I am not sure why you think it is unclear.
Viking list can have 0-24 huscarls (in Maximus). Depending upon the type chosen they can by 108, 119, 143 or 154 pts/base in TuGs of 6, 8 or 9 bases, more with the optional characteristics.
The 0-4 berserker bases replace huscarl bases (up to 2 in any TuG in Maximus), so you drop the 4 bases (so they are not costing you anything) with the berserkers that are 135 pts/base. So depending upon the classification of the huscarl, the berserker may be more or less expensive. Don't see anything wrong with that - in MeG the berserkers aren't superheroes.
If you are playing scenario games there are all sorts of possibilities for re-classifying berserkers. One I tried was that the berserk was classified as a regular huscarl but to make the base similar to an expendable. At any melee phase the berserker would go berserk if it rolled a 5 or a 6. Once berserk it would roll two dice instead of the normal one combat dice. If it rolled a S result it was treated as a skull, but if the enemy UG was unbroken at the end of melee combat then the berserker was killed.

let me make this a simpler question for Richard.
if I have a two Huscarl units and replace two of the stands on each with berserkers, do i need to purchase the berserker unit of 4 stands for 450?

1 and 2 are units of Huscarls without any Berserkers.
3 and 4 are the units each with 2 bases of Huscarls replaced by Berserkers, that is all you need to buy. (2 lines for these units as they are 2 different troops types of course)

thank you. makes sense. i previous was thinking i had to purchase the 4 units of Berserkers for 540 and than reallocate them to other qualifying. units.
You pay for how ever many bases of berserkers you are including, and don't pay for any huscarl bases they are replacing.
