Title: Can UGs charge across undefended barricades or obstacles?
Post by: lionheartrjc on May 19, 2021, 05:26:02 PM
The characteristics imply that troops defending barricades cannot charge. (actually stated on page 119).
They say that infantry only can cross undefended barricades and are slowed by 1BW.

Does this (and should this) include chargers, troops skirmishing/running away/routs and pursuits?  Page 119 uses the phrase "troops behind" for charges which I think means defending them.

Oh... I think we have to assume that "behind" means "behind", and that you can't charge across them because, after all, from the point of the unit being charged you are starting behind them.

Otherwise, I don't see why you can't pursue/rout/evade across undefended barricades/obstacles after paying the appropriate movement penalty (and only infantry can cross barricades).

I disagree: both obstacles and barricades are asymmetric in that they may only be defended from one side (see Appendix 1: 19.6 and 20.4): so you are not "behind" in the sense that you need to play a Yellow to MOVE through them.
It clearly states that barricades can "be crossed" by infantry (if undefended)  (19.5) it does not add "in the movement phase" so they are fair game during any phase where an infantry UG can cross them (skirmishing, running away, charging, moving, being pushed back, pursuing or breaking off)

I suppose we can have our Clintonesque argument over the meaning of the word "behind".  ;)  I'm coming down on the side of what I consider to be the simplest interpretation, with a nod towards the "common sense" argument that obstacles/barricades would break up the impetus of a charge. It might not be the right interpretation, and a clarification would be helpful. Does Simon still read these forums?
