Title: Late Roman camp - watchtower
Post by: Nathan on February 04, 2021, 08:53:27 PM
I've just finished the camp for my 4th C Romans. To represent the "fortification", I based it around a watchtower which I scratchbuilt from MDF, card, plastic and some Wills plastic pantile sheeting. I've done a step by step write up on my blog.

I modified a couple of standard bearers (chosen because of their lack of shields) to represent a sentry and supervisor. The two cooks (from the popular Baueda pig roast set) were given long sleeves to match my Minifigs auxiliary infantry.

Outstanding.
How long to finish such a model?
Lance.

Thank you.

To answer Lanceflint: not that long in actual doing things time but there was a lot of elapsed time whilst I found a suitable source for the ladder then get my head around paying so much for a tiny and rather crudely moulded bit of plastic. Also a lot of time thinking about how to do things. Unfortunately I should have spent a bit more time thinking as, despite the detachable roof, I got the height wrong and it won't quite fit in the box I had intended!

I find making buildings and scenery quite theraputic and a good thing to do when I can't settle to painting figures.

This is amazing.

Great paintjob but the scratchbuilt tower and the conversions on the figures is so clever.  Do you have your army painted to match so you can do a staged shot for us off the whole? Must look stunning on the table.

Thank you.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through painting the whole army. I've just finished a sub-general and am part way through a unit of horse archers. Once those are done, I'll line them all up on parade and take some photos for inspection. I've posted pictures of most of the unit individually on here as I've finished them and they are all on my blog. https://smallitalianwars.blogspot.com

Only two more infantry units, two sub-generals, 3 bolt throwers and a few extras to give the option of integral archers to some of the existing infantry and extend my last cavalry units to 6 bases.

Wow your army is gorgeous! Love the interchangeable shield = General level idea. Not only does it allow you to change your Generals composition between games, it also allows for adjusting down a general if they are killed. Think I might introduce something like this for myself going forward.  Would need then 1 red, 3 yellow, 4 green and 4 white to cover all options (including Generals being downgraded post-death). So not a big investment for a cool idea. Kudos!

I have stared in disbelief at your Italian Wars figures figures for a while now. All your work is amazing - you are clearly an artist. I'm with Dru - good idea on the shields!
