I am planning to get a parthian army for pacto purposes. Would a 40mm by 40mm base be acceptable? I am not sure 30mm by 40mm will take 4 figures.
I think the problem with 4 knights on a stand is width. More depth might help a little to stagger the figures, but I don't think it helps much.
I have a Parthian army that I'm playing solo these days trying to learn how to play it. I have the cataphracts 3 to a stand. And generals are mounted 4 figures per stand. The generals are cramped. But I like how the army looks with horse archers in contrast to the cataphracts.
3 to a stand is an option certainly. I will experiment. I think a 40mm square might acentuate the image of a heavy cavalry punch.
I have the first edition of the rules. In the Chapter 6, page 23, Simon wrote, "Base depth does not matter very much, and whatever is comfortable for the figures is best."
First, it's obvious Simon cares about the figures. Second, for the Parthian army there are only two mounted types: horse archers and cataphracts. It can be a gorgeous army. Mount them the way you want. I believe the only real requirement is that after your done painting and mounting, you have to post pictures of them.
In reality base depths are all to cope with our figures.
The reality is that all the troops are in the front 5mm anyway.
So don't fret. A bit deeper if needed is a fine compromise.
