If in the initial roll to determine attacker or defender you roll a skull and your opponent doesn't, you may choose to be attacker, but still get to choose the starting square (but not the territory type) for the PBS - 5 days before battle.  This is known as the Strategic Intercept.

(I hope I have this correct as I don't have my rules to hand!).

In the pre battle system.

I win roll off with a Skull

I can nominate you as the defender AND put the marker in a square of your territory type that I choose

Defender still chooses the Territory Type though.
