Any suggestions about where to get lodgings on the night of the 29th? Oh, and is the start time set for the 29th? Wondering if I need to get lodgings for the night of the 28th, or will I have time to travel from my brother's house in Kent that morning?
If your brother lives in Kent you will definitely need accommodation on the Friday and Saturday night.
This is where most people stayed last year. We can work out some ride sharing to and from the venue nearer the time.

Probably take 2 to 3 hours to drive from Kent depending exactly where you are - if you're not driving definitely go up the night before.

Hi
11 tickets left on the BH site folks. How many riders does that give us for the basho MEG boffins?
Hunter
35 + Hammy
Marketing Push starts this week.
"Basho MeG boffins"? <beckons to his interpreter> I can see I'll need a crash course in British before June. If only we could all agree to speak the language properly, as it's spoken on US television news.
That's just Hunter who doesn't speak any known human language :o
Nik, I must protest your downplaying of Hunter's grasp of the English language. Not many people know this but he is Donald Trump's linguistic coach. So I am afraid that when you attempt to attend your next tournament you will find it difficult to cross the wall to get there. You have been warned!!
"Basho" = competition.
"MEG boffins" = MEG experts.
I might as well round out this educational odyssey with "the Perth Dram" = a modest glass of whisky from the fair city of Perth in Scotland.
As in ....
"Alas, I find that the Perth Dram is invariably more well received than I am by the MEG boffins at the basho."
This programme has been brought to you by the Orkney Islands Broadcasting Company, motto - more mince to the minute!
(mince in the vernacular = rubbish)

Are the rumours of 2.5 hours a game true.
We played exactly 3 hour games at Campaign, 13/45 were unfinished.
That ratio will only increase if we are sub 3 hours...

I agree with Will.
3 hours encourages a good pace and a 75% chance of finishing the game. 2.5 hours will have a massive impact on army choice and I'm not sure that is what we want for our tournaments.
Ray
Three hours would be better.
"GAME LENGTH AND TIMING 2hr 30 mins + up to 15 minutes. Starting 0930 Saturday (game 2 start 1300, Game 3 start 1630). Start 0900 Sunday (game 5 12.30 start and 1600 prizes)."
Any chance we could start at 0830 both days and go for last phase at 3 hours + up to 15 minutes?
That would give us something like
0830-1145
1215-1530
1600-1915 (max)
Hunter
We played 2 1/2 hour games last Saturday and it just wasn't even close for a Parthian.
I don't feel that army can win in that amount of time.
Would definitely discourage anything fancy.. everyone will bring something that kills quickly.

3 hours dead was good at Campaign - I don't think you really need to faff around with the variable bit for MeG.
Have 45 mins between games and 3 in a day works fine IMO.

Whilst I think 3 hours would be better I'd not say that 2.5 (+ a bit) means that it wholly rules out armies with a somewhat more "subtle" approach. At Campaign this weekend using Nikaian Byzantine (mainly shooty) 4 of my 5 games finished within 2.5 hours, 3 of them victories to my army and the other a loss.
What's the list submission date and details Si?
I think its just the week before the basho as it stands in the joining instructions at the BH website but I imagine the sooner Si gets the lists the sooner we get the runners and riders to chew over.
Lists due by close of play on Friday June 21st. Please use the latest army builder from the website and INCLUDE YOUR NAME, CONTACT DETAILS AND DATE.
Please e-mail this information to simon@thewargameszone.org
Hi folks
Slight change of plan. I will be first pass list checker and RJC will keep me right if I get stuck. Please send lists to me by midnight on 14 June. I will get runners and riders out by 16 June assuming everyone plays ball. the battlefield hobbies website will be updated imminently. I will share my list on 16 June all else being equal so that we can get started with a good laugh!
Here's where to send them to with subject "Skulls"
HunterHope@pkc.gov.uk
Cheers Aye
HH
Two lists received. One approved and one being checked. Don't be shy .......... Four weeks and one day to D (deadline) Day. But why wait when you already have that killer army committed to your army builder?
HH
By the way for the avoidance of doubt etc. I sent my list to MEG Zeus Si on Monday and I have asked RJC to confirm that it's ok so don't worry that this is some heighlan' plot to gain an unfair edge over basho go-ers. I have something far more devious up my sleeve for that - The Perth Dram!
HH
Cool
Well stepped up Hunter.
If you need a hand, shout.
W
This sounds like a plot but Hunter to see my list and copy it.
I'm trying to take what I hope is the list from the earliest date.
A real power list obviously!!
Defo a scam :o
One day Skull practice comp on 16th. So suspect the lists will be rolling in after that !!!
3 lists now in. 1 approved and 2 being checked...........
HH
Has it been made official yet that each game will be 3 hours?
Standby - check, check checking on the 3 hours thing.
Update - 2 lists checked and in order, 1 more being scrutinised by Spotted Dog Productions, Army List Checking Division, Skullrollers Basho Support Group.
HH
List in...
4 lists now in. 2 approved and 2 being checked. 3 hours flat now confirmed.
Hunter
Hunter, I dare you to query Simon's list. 😂😂
History suggests it'll be illegal :P
Oh ye of little faith!
Just to be clear folks - no changes to lists are permitted once they have been sent, only minimum minor modification to correct any author errors! Keeps it all above board eh.
In the unlikely event that I make a boo boo and approve an illegal list then it will be corrected by the minimum necessary for the next game. I hope this won't happen obviously and I am checking the whole list including notes and running the lists through a fresh army builder as part of the process.
I hope to be able to declare 3/4 correct lists this evening. If we can keep this momentum going we will be looking good for runners and riders in plenty of time for some decent banter!

A bit needless IMO. Will encourage last minute submission ::)
Is your list locked in Hunter? ;)
Mine will be sent last few hours in fact it depends on what happens at the one dayer on the Sunday Battle of Belisima So might be a day late !!!!!!
Hunter's list is definitely submitted, finalised and checked. It is also normal practice that once a list is submitted then it cannot be changed unless an error is present. Has been this way in competitions for years.
To be fair to Hunter, he works on the basis that the sooner lists are submitted then the sooner you see runners and riders. Checking lists is a time consuming process. It is usually the case that those who submit late ore often the ones who moan loudest about having to wait for runners and riders.
Would be better if list deadline was 17th.
1 day Skulls practice event on 16th was arranged ages ago.
Personally dont mind seeing R and R a couple of days before. But I'm one of the few that would rather not know 1st round draw until the day of the event.
To be honest, I am not sure a last minute decision based on a one day tournament is the best acid test. One game with bum dice or just bad luck might turn you against an army that otherwise is very good. Each to their own.
It might explain a lot about Robins choices though... :D
Not I would not be as unsubtle to say that.
LOL I could of course submit a couple of lists and let you know which one LOL
Up to 6 lists now received basho go-ers! 2 approved and 4 to be checked tonight!
At this rate we will have the runners and riders out in plenty of time for some meaningful banter!
Hunter
Hopefully you have mine.
Yes John, I have yours.
We are now up to seven - yes seven! - lists received.
Keep 'em coming basho go-ers.
Hunter
Ray
Thought you'd have been making a lunge for the computer once three hour games were confirmed?
Hunter
So, that 3 hour rule...
Crikey ..... we are now up to 8 lists received.
Hunter
Must be your charm Hunter.
Aye. That'll be right.
I'm worried about Ray though, I'm figuring he's tripped over a champagne cork on his lunge for the computer and done himself a mischief on an old caviar tub.
HH
Update on progress. 4 lists conformed with authors as correct 1st time. 2 queried. 2 to check later today.
I'll be open for business again soon if anyone cares to lob a list in Ray.
HH
Nine lists now received and confirmed as correct. I have no more in my in tray for now .......
HH
Well that's us now up to 10 lists received folks. Great stuff and much appreciated. Just one wee query on the latest list to resolve and I will be able to share all 10 present and correct!
HH
11 lists received checked and approved. Desk clear for any more .....
HH
Hunter, are you on commission?
Simply the satisfaction of knowing that I have made a modest contribution to the great MEG journey John. You know me - humble to the end.
HH

Coz then how would anyone ever challenge Alasdair in the latter stages?
Maybe this year, just maybe!

Just a few weeks to list deadline and its all hotting up folks. Well tournie wise, if not weather wise anyway!
10 out of the 37 books are represented so far in the people's pick 11 lists that I have approved. Looks like folks feel that just about every book might have a viable competition army in there - even in an open format basho!
Well done Si and the list makers. Sounds like a new boy band!
HH

HH
Well a UK Eurovision entry does not have much to live up to.
Even with both arms in plaster I'm betting that Si and the List Makers would be our best reps for a good while!
So,
Is dressing up for Skulls going to be a thing? ;D
Anyone got a spare set of Samurai armour?
Would a world war 2 Japanese admiral's unit not work?
If you can find one that fits me... ;D
But maybe not the Sailor Moon version https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Japanese-School-Girl-Dress-Outfit-Sailor-Uniform-Losplay-Lostume-Fancy-Dress-HDU-/303104337820
Looks like you have been researching that dress. Just be careful or Simon the Hun will be after you.
Just I haven't got the legs to carry it off...
Thats rich - the last time I saw a pair of legs like Johns, they were hanging out of a nest!
Yes, at our club, Hunter is the one with the short fat hairy legs. Boom, boom!!

Yep - 11 books represented in the 12 lists received and approved. Amazing really.
HH
12 down so thirtyish to go.
I am crossing my fingers and toes that I don't get them all at the last minute ........
Prizes so far ... spread the news to get soem late entries ....
Wall plaque and tankard for 1/2/3
But ALSO
Skull Whiskey glass for 4/5/6/7/8/9
AND Lurkio prizes also for ...
Best terrain piece
Best painted army
Best overseas player not placed 1/2/3
Best score against Alasdair Harley

Isn't that a bit Harleyphobic?
That would be an irrational fear of Alasdair.
It's not irrational to fear playing him, when he always wins, thats a perfectly rational response! :-*
Latest list of runners coming shortly!!!!
Apparently that list from Hunter was his mental checklist not the official one. lol
S
Erm, I haven't entered ???

And Dan and Dan Maritz from USA have ... or at least are coming

Hunter/James?
Can't we tempt you Nik - going to be epic.

What, no Nik Gaukroger? Forget it, I'm staying home.
Yeah come on Nik. Its Skulls. I hate Open. I'm even driving up to Stockport for a 1 day practice event. If I can do that, you can suffer Skulls. You would be missed. I will buy you a pint. Come on you know you will have a laugh if you enter.

2 more lists from 2 more books received. Hotting up very nicely! Great basho in prospect. Sign up now if you haven't already.
HH
Hunter, what is the current count of players expected? Of lists received? BTW, I am still coming EVEN THOUGH GAUKROGER isn't. I plan to start a rumor that Nik is skipping Skulls because he fears me. It's not remotely true, but when did that slow down a good rumor? Plus, I'm not a good enough player to be comfortable trash-talking a player I might actually have to face!
Sorry, I don't have the list of riders yet. Waiting on the list from Hammy. Nik will never let a challenge like that go unanswered!
HH
That's us up to 16 lists received folks - coming from 14 different books! I hope to be able to post riders very soon - Hammy willing!
HH
Oh no, two sets of doubles... that will never do. ;D
No Hunter never buys doubles.
Worry not - miraculously we have no doublers yet!
Actually I do think that it's a testament to the rules and lists that we don't have any dominant super armies and maybe a vindication of Si's commitment to considerate tweaking to ensure and maintain the balance that makes every army viable!
Quite unlike the last 3 rulesets I've played.

At the end of the day, results more often depend on the player rather than army content. A good player will make a good fist of any army.

Hell, I typed it the way the Duke said it and anything the Duke said must be right.
Duke of Edinburgh or Duke of Sussex?
Only ever was one Duke. Big John.
Duke John of Brittany, been at least three of them...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_I,_Duke_of_Brittany
One of Burgundy https://www.britannica.com/biography/John-duke-of-Burgundy
John, Duke of Bedford http://www.englishmonarchs.co.uk/plantagenet_63.html
John Duke of Buckinghamhttps://www.westminster-abbey.org/abbey-commemorations/commemorations/john-sheffield-duke-of-buckingham-family
John, Duke of Somerset, the present duke... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Seymour,_19th_Duke_of_Somerset
I could go on...
John Duke of Somerset was only three foot six inches so is automatically excluded from being called Big John. So this thread is going down the toilet or is that down the John?

I've managed to turn around lists very quickly so far John as they've come through in a pretty steady stream. Rest assured - I'll do my very best to get the R&R out as quickly as possible to allow room for some pre basho banter! I really enjoy that stuff. Hopefully we'll get the draw out just before the basho as well to keep the pot boiling!
I expect there may be a slight delay if some folks want to road test armies at Belisma this weekend but if you're not Belismaing then an on time list would be great so there's not a deluge in a oney!
TIA
HH
Keep up the good work Hunter.
Good of you not to mention the 2,000 point penalty you are applying to armies submitted after the deadline. Oops, sorry as I just realised that you were keeping that as a little surprise.
2000?
I was told 8000, or whatever Robin was using... :D
My 2 x lists are on my email draft ready to go. If my Minoan/Mycenian lists is crap this weekend it will be my Norman list. Will press button after last game Sunday.
It'll depend a lot on the armies you end up fighting and the terrain and the dice and ........... however do have a great time at the weekend and you'll be a winner regardless of the results!

Keep up the good work Hunter.
Good of you not to mention the 2,000 point penalty you are applying to armies submitted after the deadline. Oops, sorry as I just realised that you were keeping that as a little surprise.
Also whoever submits their list last has to sit next to Hunter at mealtimes.
That's us up to 20 lists received checked and with just a little rework all approved . Almost half way there. 20 from 16 books folks.

Don't get ahead of yourself.
I know a few trainspotter types who take a deadline literally
Well, I have not had much time for gaming lately, with family issues and travelling back and forth between Indiana and Texas. So, alas, I will not make it to Skull Rollers or Historicon this year as I had hoped. :(
Well I am now feeling neglected and insulted. Two weeks to go to a major tournament and Hunter has not made his usual irrational prediction about me being tournament favourite. Am I loosing my allure or is it something to do with the fact that he has checked my list and has already spotted my amateurish mistakes in army composition.
In any case my carefully designed tournament preparations have gone up in smoke. Arrived at our club on Thursday for a critical match with the superb Stewart Riddick only to find that our gaming space had been taken over by a last minute funeral tea!! NowI can be blunt but how do you say to those lingering at a funeral tea that they are going to have to get out of the room as we have a wargame organised?
Was this a deliberate ploy of Mr Hope?
I would say the greiving have priority.
We can always game another day.

The boffins at Spotted Dog Productions have been overwhelmed by the blue on blue action that passes for a leadership(?) race in GB. It does however now appear that BJ is such a peach that no-one in that race can come remotely close to his standards on integrity, gravitas and inclusiveness so they are now ready to turn their faces to the other great competition of our time - Skulls! So worry not John - a full and frank independent assessment of your chances is very much on the cards! So sorry that some pesky mourners got in the way of your training camp arrangements but useful intel for the boys at SDP to factor into their podium predictions.
HH
The list submission deadline has passed folks and I have 20 lists from (I reckon) 42 entrants. I think that roughly 5 bods are playing at Belisma so we can forgive them the extra time to perfect their uber armies prior to Skulls. For others I would really appreciate lists asap.
Thanks

Changed by the list checker on this forum over a month ago.
So not really official then IMO.
As you know Nik, regardless of when you make the closing date some people will be late which puts pressure on the checker. As soon as the closing date for lists has passed then the world and his friend are looking for runners and riders. I am sure Hunter thought the 21st was very late to check that many lists especially as he has a job, family and other commitments.

Not saying bringing the date forward wasn't a good idea - IMO about 2 weeks before a comp is a good date - its just that not having it on the actual comp web page and just the list checker putting a post up on a forum thread (and one where it could easily get lost) is not really official. Not to mention the existing open comp this weekend gone. A bit more rigour in the approach would have been useful.
Greetings basho go-ers.
I meant to say last time around that we are at 28 lists received from a whopping 17 books. That's an awesome spread in army types and a date range of over 3000 years!
Howzat!

Hi
Just waiting on lists from the following fine fellows
Adrian Nash,Adrian Pitfield, Alasdair Harley, Bill Skinner, Frederic Maillard, Lee Sanders, Mathew Poole, Phillip Powell, Robert Smith, Roger Pitfield, Simon Clarke and Stuart Tonge.
No emergency here ....... but the sooner I get those lists the sooner you get your R&R and can start the pre pre battle skirmishing.
HH
Come on the Daventry twelve. Time to show your hand.
One of the Holy Trinity, and Simon Clarke...
The Pitfield brothers are always last minute.com...

Oh, which Phillip Powell? ;)
No idea which PP.
But ..... down to just 11 outstanding as Adrian Nash has weighed in with an approved list!
Nearly there.

I leave for England and Skullrollers tomorrow. My army (Western Later Hemophiliac Pacifists) is packed and ready. All I have to do is get there.
I am going to be staying at my brother's in London until the 28th, and had thought to take the train to Daventry. All I know about this is to take the Tube to some train station or other with a name familiar from Sherlock Holmes stories, and then....and then it all goes blank. How does one find out which train to catch? The website I found was confusing- is there a better method? Also, what's the best way to get from the train station to the Cross Roads B&B?
Suggestions are very welcome.
Daventry does not have a railway station. There is another station nearby which then runs a bus service into Daventry. The Crossroads is a few miles outside the town and equally important quite a few miles from the venue in the opposite direction.
Congratulations Nik.
Nearest stations are Northampton, or Milton Keynes.
Down to our last eight folks;
Adrian Pitfield, Bill Skinner, Frederic Maillard, Lee Sanders, Mathew Poole, Robert Smith, Roger Pitfield and Simon Clarke.
R&R won't be long now!

The nearest train station is Long Buckby. It is about 5 miles from Daventry. There is a bus from LB to Daventry but it is infrequent. Try www.thetrainline.com for train tickets and times. Google bus from LB to D to get bus times. All the best.

Note Kiel adjusted after we spotted a flaw in Preston ....
Kiel
Add "Kiel can only be claimed by and UG that is 2BW wide ". Add "Kiels are exceptions to Pursuits and Press Forward moves: they only pursue if the entire Kiel can do so (so if there are 4 TuGs in a block, all must be able to pursue) and they never press forward after contact." The intent being that they keep their Kiel formation together and avoid running off in ways that break it up.
I have a Pitfield pinkie promise for lunchtime today folks so if anyone has contact details for the famous five please try a nudge.
I am literally aching to share the incredible variety of armies that will be showcasing at Skulls. More variety than the old Woolworths pick and mix! Remember that? ......... happy days!
HH
Pick and Mix, worth more per ounce than gold!
As an extra incentive you should delay issuing runner and riders to players who are late with their list so if someone is seven days late then they get the runners and riders seven days after everyone else. In extreme cases they might get them the week after the tournament concludes.
The Pitfields have weighed in and so has Mr Saunders. Down to the fantastic four! We are just inches from R&R! Standby.

Cross Roads B & B or Cross Roads Hotel? I went to Skull Rollers last year and went up from London. I caught the train to Northampton from London Euston and then bus to Cross Roads Hotel (I think you can also go to Long Buckby and catch a bus to Daventry and then another bus back to Cross Roads at Weedon Bec). The bus trip is almost the same length of time as the train! All up it was around two hours - just under an hour for the train, and about 50 min for the bus. You should be able to score a lift with another gamer from the hotel to Daventry. I don't know about from Cross Roads B & B, where is that? Book the train early to get a cheap fare, and different times will be different costs. Don't just rock up to the station to buy a ticket, it's usually more expensive.

Some interesting armies in there. Looking forward to seeing how Maximilian and the Asian armies go. Classical and shooty cavalry armies are thin on the ground - is this due to relatively short game time or are they not very good?
Disappointed I can't make it this year, hope Will and Paul will go ok without me gifting them 15 points 😉
Btw, Hunter didn't you come top 5 last year? I reckon the podium is calling...

Fair analysis mate. Won't be the same without ya - who am I gonna share the breakfast table with - maybe next year eh? Yeah, I fluked a decent showing last year right enough but you can only surf your luck for so long before you are caught out and dumped on your bahooky! Britcon in August last year taught me that!

Pre draw 1-2-3 predictions.
1. Alasdair (who else)
2. John Munro (dark horse form the North)
3. Ray Duggins (his time has come)
Anyone disagree?
HH
Aye, Hunter, what were you on last night.
My high horse of course - we are Khawarij after all ..........
HH
He's in at 22, rather than alphabetically listef

yep
Where's your money going then Rayman?
HH
Having predicted Britcon top 3 last year, I'm going to save blushes by saying, everyone deserves a medal. You've all done very well!
Nik G will be taking over Stuart Tonge's Field Marshall's baton on the Sunday fellahs. He's using Mid Sassanid.
HH
BANTER BOOSTER ...
First round draw. Entirely random (can't play club members or, if from USA/France, people from your own country until day 2). First attempt worked! :D
Some fine match ups ... see you soon.

Great! Ottoman Turks! Right out of the gate my poor Ellie's face all the skilled bow in the Ancient world. Only one option- SUBMARINE STRATEGY!!! I can always limit the scale of the disaster by frequent trips to the men's room...

Not a problem - 5 games gives scope for one bum result.
HH
Draw 6 is a belter 5th vs 6th seed both with Crown of Aragon! Must look in on that one once Frederic has cleared my lead from the table! Also the Bamarised Boys vs the Turkish Terrors - could be a corker!
Is there a seeding?
Or a seedling?
Or gave we all just gone to seed?
I have definitely gone to seed. Confused of Perth.

Another comment we agree on. Scary!
HH
I can see John doing very well this year. I may even have underestimated him in my podium predictions!
HH
My predictions
First: John Munro
Second: Hunter Hope
Third: James McVeiken
and Scotland to win the next World Cup.
:o ;D
Ray to podium this year.
Good army, knows how to use it, has had plenty of practice.
No excuses ;D

It's my army he's talking about, not my wee willy winkee
Steady tiger - no need to get all defensive ......
Just goes to prove what I was saying earlier "Duggins for the podium!"

I am also looking for a MeG Magna practice. I have 2 Magna armies with me or you could create a 6k Magna army out of your Skulls army.
Ray
I am happy to swap games with you and play both a full sized game and a Magna game!

Any one got a hankie? I feel a severe nose bleed coming on being at the top.
I am sure Alasdair will restore the normal world order in our game on Saturday morning and put me back to n my rightful place.
Sunday morning even. Lost control of time.
Interested in time travel?
Meet me here last Thursday.
