Title: Muslim Indian Sultanates, Rajputs and neo-Muslims
Post by: nikgaukroger on August 06, 2020, 08:12:21 AM
Have just read an interesting paper called "Mongol Presence in Northern Hindustan under the Delhi Sultanate" which included some information on Mongols within the Delhi sultanate army and also with Rajputs. Throws up some possible small list changes. Its main use is that whilst Peter Jackson, for example, covers the Mongols in sultanate service he mainly concentrates on the activities of the powerful amirs within the politics and hardly mentions soldiery in the army - possibly as it was a brief thing.

Mongols were a significant factor from about 1266 CE, however, this was mainly at the senior level with important refugees being given senior posts as opposed to material numbers of troops arriving - in this the situation was similar to the Mamluk Sultanate. However, in 1294 CE about 4,000 Mongol soldiers were settled around Delhi with their families. They were there until 1311 CE when they were massacred by the then sultan as being a danger - there may have been about 10,000 killed at this point including families. These Mongols converted to Islam and were known as neo-Muslims probably because their conversion was considered to be a bit superficial.

The soldiers served in the sultanate army for example in 1299 CE they were part of an army of 14,000 cavalry and 20,000 infantry that invaded Gujarat. At the end of this campaign they were part of a mutiny of 2-3,000 men caused by a dispute over booty distribution. As a result of this some of their families back in Delhi were massacred and the soldiers deserted to a Rajput kingdom. However, despite this it appears there were still Mongol soldiers around until the final 1311 CE massacre.

The soldiers who deserted to the Rajputs - the Chahamana (Chauhan) kingdom of Ranthambore - fought for these as allies until the fall of Ranthambore in 1301 CE. Their archery skill is noted and they formed a significant part of the army - it is possible that their commander also commanded some Rajput troops as well as the Mongols.

List Ideas

From 1294 CE to 1311 CE the Delhi Sultanate be allowed an UG of Mongol cavalry or 4 or 6 bases; Formed Flexible, Unprotected, Short Spear, Skilled, Bow, optional Melee Expert, Dismountable - i.e. normal Mongol cavalry.

From 1299 CE to 1301 CE in the Rajput list the Chahamana (Chauhan) king of Ranthambore be allowed an Allied Contingent of 0-8 bases of these Mongols who must be led by a Professional Mongol allied general who can also command other troops from the list.

The Rajput list needs its end date changing - currently it is 1244 CE, however, the list historical notes mention 1303 CE and in fact 1310 CE may be a better date as the Delhi sultanate was fighting them until about then.
