I freely confess that this question came about because I could not resiste the beautiful new Irregular Indian sculpts of the Maiden Guard.. I am painting a 6-stand unit for my Classical Indian army.
I am planning to run them using the 'Guard Infantry' line in the list (Drilled Loose, Superior, protected,SS). Not exactly terror inducing, but reasonably useful troops, especially in rough going.
My question is this; given the paucity of sources for Indian history in general, am I plainly wrong to accept that these units actually fought in battle? Their existence is well attested, but were they actually fighting troops? If nobody can cite sources showing I'm living in fantasy land, I'm inclined to use them as productive of color and a bit of harmless fun. On the other hand, if it's clear they were simply ceremonial palace guards and never went into combat, I should perhaps reconsider.
Anybody know the answer?
Don't think they are fantasy because every manufacturer of Indians has them. The figures are too cool 😎 not to use. I would use them with CiC and in a command stand in the Infantry. Only my opinion but seems like they were palace guards
