We had a great game last night - Late 100 Years War. We had one situation which I be grateful for some clarity on, please.
A French battle line with a unit of crossbow with a unit of dismounted knights was charged by English knights and after a couple of turns the crossbow was no more leaving 5 stands of cavalry fighting 4 dismounted knights but in front edge contect with only 2 of them.
A second unit of French foot knights then charged into the 3 stands of English knights not engaged.
So - we have a unit of English knights who are already engaged in melee charge to the front by a French unit. So my questions are:
1. Do the English knights get the benefit of the +1 vs foot not standing to receive?
2. Do the English knights get the +2 benefit of "Charging lancers"?
3. Do the English knights benefit from Shatter?
We could see nothing which said you didn't so to crack on with the game gave all the above. However, this seemed intrinsically wrong for a cavalry unit already locked in a static melee to benefit from these factors which would surely arise from some degree of forward movement?
Have we missed something? or many things! :D
The answer to your questions are Yes, Yes and Yes.
Don't think of the melee as static, the models are static but a real melee wouldn't be.
A trick for the French foot knights might be to move up to 1BW away. The English knights would then become subject to forced charges. They can then stand to receive the charge.

Thanks for your help Richard. So the 3 files not in front to front contact, in the existing melee the unit is already fighting in, charges forward (leaving their two other stands in the existing melee)? Surely they then lose conact and split their unit into two parts and will end up in two separate unconnected melees?
Sorry I'm being dumb here but I didn't realise you could split a unit in that way.
A UG in combat is not subject to the usual restrictions. By making MF moves it can end up facing multiple directions and due to casualties individual bases may become separated. This is all fine. As soon as the UG is no longer in combat it must reform (page 98).
UGs in combat but with engaged bases can charge up to 1BW (same as a press forward move). They may be subject to forced/free charges as per the normal rules. This is in the Notes of the C2 move (prompt charges) in the Prompted Actions Table.
p.s. I don't think you are being dumb. It is not necessarily intuitive that you can split a UG. They are called UGs not units for this very reason.
Richard
Thanks Richard - understand now :D
Mind you generally a bit tricky for us as we're mostly using Impetus bases.....

No such thing as being dumb.
All new rules take some getting used too.
Delighted you enjoyed yourselves and welcome aboard! 8) ;D
