Title: British Lists and so-so games
Post by: stuuk on July 18, 2020, 10:40:53 PM
Been trying to have a few games with the British lists and we've found the games to be well a bit of a let down really.
It goes like this:

The cavalry is almost universally better than the infantry which is pretty crap (like average - dev charge)

The infantry is generally a reasonable match for one another and will be green-green after charging.
There's a bit of skirmisher and sometimes a protracted skirmisher fight.

But.. it all comes down to the cavalry. Either you screen the other blokes cav with your cav or you get flanked and die.
Even if not flanked, to the front the cav will mow down the foot with wild abandon.
Whichever side's cav win the fight will ultimately win the battle.
The infantry fight is pretty slow and so the cav have time to win their own fight and then deliver the decisive blow.

Now it may be that what I've just described accurately portrays the fighting of the period, but it's not a lot of fun to play.
Pretty mush whoever wins the cav fight wins the game, and that's about the size of it.

Be interested to hear comments or thoughts?
Stu.

I don't have them but for the Anglo's it was:
4 x mounted hird (sup, s/spear, combat shy)
1 x other cav
6(?) x warband
2 x SK archer
1 x SK jav

And the welsh were..
2 x cav
~8 x foot, some with short spear most warband
4+ x SK jav
2 x light horse jav

Looks like it should more come down to the terrain.
No terrain and the cavalry will dominate I guess.
Terrain - even hills - start to change the odds a lot.

It was the period where cavalry started to dominate infantry IIRC.

Well, the Welsh in loose want terrain and the Saxons not so much.
The Saxons have the cavalry advantage too so again, less terrain.
Against post Romans though they got annihilated as best cav is Roman. Some good die rolls may have been involved too.

Not necessarily anything ahistoric as i said, just really it's all about the cavalry and the infantry fight is just a long grind to nowhere.
Did see for the first time loose vs close made a difference, but it's marginal, a shove being not a big deal for the most part.

A marginal is how its supposed to be.

I suspect both want some terrain to neutralises the cavalry.
The Welsh have to come out and fight to win.
And as its a marginal penalty to do so you shouldn't get hiding in terrain.
Deliberately so.
