Hello, I thought I had seen this somewhere, but couldn't find it.
Is there a general exception that forced charges don't have to be declared if your TUG would be -3 in Charge Combat? In the characteristics sheet it has it for devastating chargers - "4. They have Forced Charges against enemy TUGs within 3BW unless they have missile weapons or they would be 3 or more factors down in Charge Combat."
So, lancers will have to charge into pikes at 3BW or less, and other TUGs (eg short spear) would have to charge at 1BW? But devastating chargers wouldn't have to charge at any range if they are -3? Or have I missed an exception in the rules somewhere?

Just to be clear, NEITHER DC or non missile armed troops are forced to charge at <3 BW and <1 BW respectively.

I am so bloody confused by this whole thread now.
Sorry, my fault. Just couldn't find in the rules the forced charge exception (because it was on the QRS).
Normally, devastating chargers and charging lancers have forced charges if they are <= 3BW. TUGs without missile weapons have a forced charge at <= 1BW.
But, they don't have to do a forced charge if they will be down 3 factors in the Charge combat. So, for example, average lancers don't have to force charge into 4 rank deep average pikes.
It's the 'you don't have to commit suicide rule' - horse don't have to charge elephant. etc.

Yes it is a handy short hand to cover all sorts of complete suicide charges.
Means the reasons could be numerous - poor cav. vs Elephants or ... into some horrible terrain uphill or ... average Gauls vs Exceptional Legionaries uphill....or ...
Just a little bit of hesitance and sense.
Quite independent of the things that cause to charge - a global exception.
