Title: A balanced Maximus Goth army
Post by: Glactophagos on May 20, 2020, 01:40:10 PM
As I'm still in the planning phase, buying things (I hope to mix many brands of miniatures for variation), I'd very much like to hear your opinions on what constitutes a balanced Goth army for Maximus.

Care to share?  ;)
Cheers,
Cavi

depends on what got army, but i would go for flexible cav and as much as possible  superior infantry
3 units of skirmisher if not more

There are a few Goth lists were you thinking of one in particular?

Lots of choice with Goths.

Tervingi - A barbarian foot army.  Great if you like to plough straight ahead with masses of foot.
Greuthingi or Early Ostrogoth - A barbarian cavalry army with some foot.  Probably need to be an experienced player to get the best out of this army.
Gothic - I would suggest the Alaric option which allows you to incorporate some elements of the later Roman army.
Tolosan Visigoth - This is a bit of a dark period in terms of military history. A mix of barbarian with a few Roman elements.
Italian Ostrogothic - Again a barbarian cavalry army, but a bit punchier with some iinfantry.

With a judicial mix of figures, you can probably field models that look okay for any of these armies.

I select my armies because of the history, but have sort of got to the stage where I am interested in so much history that I can probably field armies from about 400 of the 627 lists....

A very helpful comment! I didn't realise the Goths were such a cavalry heavy bunch. Ideally I'd like to build an army that can be adapted to most periods. Starting from a PSC- goth box, I guess I'll get some extra cavalry first. I, have to look up the max number of cav TUG's though, so as not to overdo it.

I think this one is quite interesting and possibly effective as you can have a good chunk of Melee Expert flexible infantry. Limited mounted though - mind you, that hasn't hurt my Romans.

The Tolosan has some similarities but is more cavalry oriented and the infantry less good in a prolonged fight as they don't get Melee Expert.

The Roman parts of both can, of course, be done with the PSC Romans  :)

Hi Cavi,
I use Goths a fair bit. They took a bit of a hit in the last round of list revisions so if you look around many lists you see might be for the early rules. At them moment its a pretty chunky army. Its got very few great troops, but you can generally out-attrition everyone

Here is an example I use - Radagaisus (which is probably the best option)

Basically all the infantry goes 4 deep and cavalry 3 deep , and based on the cheapens you should match most army frontages. You have 30 cavalry and you may experiment with a few 4's for flank exploitation. Its a bit frustration to play sometimes as you mostly are 'whiting' people to death, and you won't get those heroic charges. But conversely people won't like to fight it as its stodgy, and takes a bit of getting rid of.

thanks
Simon

Later Visigoth is also very good , where there Gardingi retained their javelin , so are great skirmish cavalry for baiting. But that does take a bit more getting used to
